St.Edwards RC Church, Swanage – the first century

Built in 1904, this Neo-Gothic church has a rich tapestry of interior murals. These were painted by Fra Newbery and his wife Jesse. The famous photographer Helen Muspratt sat for the face of the Angel Gabriel.
Fra Newbery played a major role in establishing the Glasgow School of Art in Edwardian times, cooperating with Renee MacIntosh, the noted designer. Francis Newbery was an accomplished artist in his own right, retiring to Corfe in 1917.
The architect was the well-known priest-architect, Canon Scoles, who designed and built many churches in the south during the Catholic revival of Edwardian times.
One of the more notable early priests at St.Edwards was Father Carr, whose selection of Newbery in 1926 for the murals proved to be an inspired choice. He was also Chairman of Swanage Urban District Council in the mid 1930’s.
Many colourful characters came and went during the progress of St. Edwards church in the 20th Century, this presentation will highlight some of them.
