Sherbourne & Sandford Orcas Manor House

The first of the Purbeck Society’s visits of 2013 took place in variable weather to Sherborne and Sandford Orcas on 8th May.  We were fortunate to have the services of popular Blue Guide Peter Welton who intorduced us to the history of the Abbey from its Saxon origins in AD 705, through the fraught relationship of the monks and parishioners to the present parish church of the town.

In the afternoon we were escorted over the delightful Sandford Orcas Manor House.  Dating from the 16th Century, it has changed hardly at all.  According to its charming owner, Sir Mervyn Medlicott whose family have been connected with the house for generations, it is not the easiest property to heat!

The mainly 15th century church of St Nicholas in the grounds was also well worth a visit.  Another very interesting visit, enjoyed by some 48 members.
